Character Spotlight: Lillian Cooper

June 1, 2026

Hey Everyone!

This month, I’d like to continue my character discussion from the Frontier Hearts Trilogy and give you some insight into Lillian Cooper.

Early in the development of Frontier Kindred, I knew that Nate’s family would play a central role in the story. The family’s move from Missouri to Kansas was at the heart of the novel, and I wanted readers to understand the relationships and sacrifices that shaped Nate before he ever arrived in Silver Creek. I also knew that Nate would have a sibling, and that’s where Lillian was born.

For those who have read the trilogy, you know that Lillian is only twelve years old when the story begins. At first, she served primarily as part of Nate’s family foundation and support system. However, as the series developed, so did her role in the story.

By the time I began plotting Books Two and Three, Lillian had become far more integral to the larger narrative than I originally anticipated. As the timeline progressed, it became necessary for her to grow older so that her character could contribute to the story in meaningful and practical ways. What began as a supporting role gradually evolved into one of the trilogy’s most rewarding character arcs.

In many ways, Lillian became the second character whose development surprise me the most. The more I wrote, the more opportunities I found to weave her into the story. Her growth, relationships, and personal journey naturally became an important subplot throughout the series.

As I’ve said before, one of the greatest joys of writing is watching characters grow beyond their original purpose. I absolutely loved how Lillian developed throughout the trilogy, and I especially enjoyed writing the close bond she shares with Nate and Jack. Their family dynamic provided the perfect emotional counterpoint to the conflicts and challenges in each book.

Next month, I can’t wait to discuss Eleanor Callahan and some of the other memorable residents of Silver Creek.

Until then, take care and enjoy your summer!

— Chris
